A Mid-Autumn Light Dream
The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated by people from all walks of life in Singapore, and its arrival is eagerly anticipated every year. Sometimes called the Lantern or Mooncake Festival in Singapore, the Mid-Autumn Festival has its origins in Chinese mythology, and is associated with Chang’e, the goddess of the moon.
Over time, the Mid-Autumn Festival became a harvest festival, and today, it is simply a time for families and friends to get together, where children carry colourful lanterns and people bask in the glow of the moon which is at its fullest and roundest. It is also customary during the celebration to enjoy a famous delicacy, the mooncake (a traditional Chinese pastry filled with lotus seed paste).
Celebrations will go on across Singapore, but Chinatown is the best place to get caught up in the excitement. Many of its bustling streets will be lit up by a sea of mesmerising lights and you’ll also find displays of colouful lanterns all around.
Make a beeline for Chinatown during the Mid-Autumn Festival and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of this celebration.
