The ronggeng originated from Java, Indonesia, and is similar to Thailand’s ramwong as it speaks of love between a man and woman through the use of poems in the lyrics. Zapin is frequently used in variety shows on Malay television today as it is most festive by nature, while the joget possesses strong Portuguese influences.
Traditional Malay dancers occasionally also use props such as candle dishes, rice sieves and paper umbrellas in their dance to illustrate the traditions associated with the music.
