Marina Bay Golf Course

Location, location, location! A quick hop across the bay from the CBD is Singapore’s first and only 18-hole public course, with commanding 360-degree views of the city skyline and Gardens by the Bay, be it day or night. Designed in the traditional Scottish style, it offers scant water hazards and copious pot bunkers, plus one additional curiosity: the island’s only par-6 hole. Bookings can be conveniently done through the Internet; available tee-off times are displayed and confirmations are instant.

Champions Public Golf Course

Tucked away in a residential area about 20 minutes by car from town, this easily accessible par-34, nine-hole course is fairly challenging in terms of both strategic as well as physical demands, thanks to its hilly terrain and tiny greens. You will meet golfers of varying calibre here due to its policy of accepting players without handicap or proficiency certificates. If you belong to this category or wish to brush up your skills, the establishment has made available a host of experienced PGA professional coaches, including a former French Open champ, for one-on-one lessons.

Fees: From S$21.50 for “twilight golf” tee-offs after 5pm on weekdays

Mandai Executive Golf Course

The course’s flatness and mix of short par-3 and par-4 only holes render it perfect for beginners or even advanced golfers seeking to stretch their legs over a stress-free game. Although it is located away from central Singapore, the 40-minute trek out to get here can be worthwhile due to the fresh air from the surrounding reservoirs and nature reserves.

Fees: From S$26.75 on weekdays

Changi Golf Club

An excellent option if you are staying near the airport or working at Changi Business Park, this club started under the British Royal Air Force post World War II. Privatised in 1971, it allows walk-ins. The military connection is something you cannot miss: the par-34, nine-hole course winds through remnants of the past, like soldiers’ barracks, gun emplacements and air-raid bunkers. All in all, it is a rather compact course with interesting features such as valleys, streams and what used to be the world’s narrowest fairway on the 8th hole.

Fees: From S$48.15 on weekdays
