Asia is experiencing a travel boom. Increased disposable income, the rise of low-cost carriers and a relaxing of travel restrictions have enabled more Asians to travel. According to World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) projections, a large proportion of the travellers between 2010 and 2030 will come from the Asia Pacific region, with the Chinese taking the lead. A top destination for Asian travellers is to other Asian countries, an uprising trend reflected in visitor arrivals and hotel occupancy rates to tourism investment growth and business travel expenditure. Asian travellers are projected to account for at least 50 per cent of global tourism expenditure by 2020, making this region ripe for investment opportunities and growth.
A global tourism and aviation hub
Singapore sits at the centre of a bustling travel network within this region and to the rest of the world. It is one of the top tourism and aviation hubs in the world, ranked 1st in Asia for travel and tourism competitiveness. Changi International Airport is the world’s 6th busiest international airport, serving more than 100 airlines and with more than 50 million passengers passing through annually. Homegrown national carrier Singapore Airlines and its regional subsidiaries SilkAir and Scoot fly to more than 63 cities in 35 countries.
Gateway to Asia
Attracted to Singapore's dynamic business environment and ideal position as a gateway to the region, global hotel leaders such as InterContinental Hotels Group, Hilton Worldwide and Carlson Rezidor have their regional headquarters here. Travel technology companies such as TripAdvisor, Rakuten Travel and Skyscanner have also set up base in the country.
Bringing Asia to the world
Singapore brand Banyan Tree Holdings has spread its message of wellness in a hotel to the world, while hospitality developers Global Premium Hotels Limited and Far East Orchard Limited continue to flourish in the region.
